Overview

This mid-Atlantic ridge is pulling apart the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates at a rate of 2.5 centimeters per year. While most of this happens deep on the ocean floor, this portion of the ridge runs right through the middle of Iceland. The Bridge Between Continents offers a unique experience to walk across the tectonic plates!

Attraction Details

The Bridge Between Continents is a unique area of Iceland, where you can see a large fissure at the area where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart. This bridge serves as a symbol for the connection between two continents and it was previously called “Leif the Lucky” bridge, named after the famous explorer Leif Ericson, who was known for being the first Icelander to set foot in North America.

When visiting the site, feel free to explore the area and walk on the sand on both sides. On the North American side when you cross the bridge, there are a few rock formations that you can climb on, which provide an elevated view over the area. We would also recommend walking underneath the bridge itself to fully experience walking between the two tectonic plates.
