How to Get There & Parking

Address:

Kerið Volcano Crater

Parking: Free

Parking is a bit tough and there is a small parking lot, so we would recommend getting there either in the morning or late afternoon to avoid peak visiting hours.

Attraction Details

Kerið is a volcanic crater lake in south Iceland, along the Golden Circle, and is thought to have formed when the magma in the center simply depleted itself – creating what is there today. We would recommend arriving either early in the morning, or later in the day, because the parking lot is pretty tiny and there really isn’t any parking available along the road. Admission is $3.50 / 400 ISK per person and we think it’s worth it since it’s pretty minimal and we ended up spending close to an hour here. You also receive a brochure about the crater to learn a bit more about its history.

We feel it’s best to walk to the left first and go around clockwise, since there is a staircase that leads down into the crater towards the beginning of the hike and it was a good idea we decided to do that first. Once you’re down inside the lower ring of the crater, there is a path to walk around. It’s actually very peaceful and the water at the bottom is perfectly still, since it is protected from the wind by the crater walls surrounding it.

After we walked back up the stairs, we continued around the outside ring of the crater and we felt the best photo taking opportunity is towards the south side, as you’re looking over the crater and there is a mountain in the backdrop. This was a quick, fun stop along our drive near the Golden Circle and we would recommend stopping if you have the time!
