Attraction Tips

Walk Behind the Waterfall

Make sure you walk behind the waterfall! You might get a little misty / wet as you walk around, but it’s a must do when visiting this attraction.

Visit at Sunset for an Incredible Picture

While this is an attraction that you can visit at anytime of the day, it’s particularly incredible to stand behind the falls leading up to sunset, where you have a view of both the waterfall and the sun setting.

Visit Gljúfrabúi Waterfall at This Same Stop

This stop features another amazing waterfall, Gljúfrabúi, that is hidden in a cave just a five minute walk from Seljalandsfoss.

Attraction Details

When you arrive, the falls will appear out of nowhere as you drive up the road and you can see it right from the parking lot. The path is very clearly marked and the best way to walk around the falls is starting to the right. There is a path that turns into a staircase that brings you around behind the waterfall, where you can hear the power of the falls echoing against the rocks behind you. There are plenty of places for picture opportunities on all sides of the waterfall as you walk around.

As you walk up closer to the waterfall, it’s very likely that you will get a bit wet, but just from the mist of the waterfall as it hits the water below. So, wear a jacket, but don’t expect to get very wet. We spent about 20 minutes soaking in the views before moving onto Gljúfrabúi Waterfall.

There are also food trucks and bathrooms here – we were in the mood for a hot chocolate and shared a lamb sandwich as a snack, which really hit the spot.
