How to Book a Car

  • Visit Campervan Iceland’s website: http://www.campervaniceland.com/
  • From the menu, click on Book > Campers which will take you to this page here: http://www.campervaniceland.com/camper-van-iceland
  • They offer a few different models, so pick the one right for you! Once you find the right car, click Book Now
    • It was just two people for our trip, so we chose the Campervan Play option
  • Select the dates you will be traveling
    • Pay attention to the times, as they’re in Military Time. So, 5:00 means 5am and 17:00 means 5pm
    • To make sure the quote is accurate, be sure to double check when you’re picking up and dropping off as it aligns with your trip / flights
  • Select the appropriate Vehicle from the drop down
    • Important Note: If you need to drive an automatic car, make sure you select the automatic option from the drop down. We saw someone as the office who could not drive a manual car, but they selected it incorrectly as an option from this drop down on the website (since it’s the default) and they needed to make different arrangements. Make sure to choose the Campervan Play DIESEL (automatic) from that drop down if you need an automatic car.
  • Select the Pick-Up and Drop-Off Location
  • Select Insurance Options
    • We HIGHLY recommend getting the Gravel Insurance option – trust us on this
    • We didn’t get any other insurance and didn’t have any problems, but definitely get the Gravel Insurance. There are some parts of roads that are not paved and you’re going to want to have this insurance just in case.
  • The cost / quote will automatically be calculated on the page and if everything looks good, click Book Now to take you to the payment page where you fill out your credit card information
  • Fill in all your billing details and then you’ll need to pay 16% of the total campervan cost at the time of booking. After confirming the cost and all of your billing details, click Book Now to pay!
  • You should receive an email confirmation shortly after booking. You’re all set!
    • When booking cars for international trips, we personally like to email the company we booked with right afterwards to confirm our reservation, just to avoid any surprises when we get there. If you want to reach out to the Campervan Iceland team to ask them any questions, their email is [email protected]

Pick-Up and Campervan Details

After you land at Keflavík International Airport and go through border control, follow signs towards the exit / arrival hall. There will be a representative from Campervan Iceland holding up a clip board with the company logo on it. The Campervan Iceland logo on the sign is with a bunch of other logos because they share a provider called RENT-IS. The person is very easy to spot and was standing on the left as we walked out.

Once you connect with the representative, they’ll have your name on a list that they cross off and then bring you to a shuttle that will take you to the car rental office, which is just a quick 5 min drive away. When you get to the office, all you need to do is complete the remaining balance on the car (you’ll pay 16% of the total cost up front online) and then run through a car inspection. During the inspection, they provide details of what supplies are in the car and how to operate everything. The staff was super friendly and we had the keys to the car in 15 minutes within getting to the office.

A few awesome things here to call out that Campervan Iceland provides are the WiFi, USB adaptors and Refrigerator / Cooler. Having WiFi in the car was a game changer, as we were able to pull up directions and search for food or gas stations as needed during our trip.

What is included in the Campervan Play option:

  • Unlimited km/miles
  • Sleeping room and seats for 2 people
  • Double bed (140 x 190 cm)
  • Free chairs & camping table
  • Automatic heating system for the sleeping area
  • Sleeping bags
  • Refrigerator/Cooler
  • WiFi 3G
  • Kitchenware & Camping Gas
  • Radio/CD/MP3/USB
  • CDW Insurance and Final cleaning (included)

There are USB adaptors in both the front and back of the car, but since there was only one adaptor in the front of the car (which we used for charging our phones), we decided to hook up the WiFi in the back. Lastly, because we were planning on shopping for food at the grocery store, having a Refrigerator / Cooler in the car was perfect. The cooler runs anytime the car is on, and you can also turn on a setting that keeps it running when the car is off. This helped keep deli meats and other items we bought at the grocery store cold at all times.

Drop-Off Details

The drop-off procedure is very easy and only took us about 5-10 minutes. When you’re putting the address in, be sure to search Rent.is – not Campervan Iceland. Make sure to fill up the gas tank before you drop it off! There is a gas station only a few minutes before you get to the rental office, which is super convenient. When dropping the car off, all you need to do is pull up, unload the car and hand over the keys for them to do an inspection of the car to make sure there’s no damage.

During our entire Iceland trip, we didn’t have a 4×4 and were able to do everything on our itinerary without causing any damage to the car. After they look over the car and everything looks good, you’ll get a receipt and you’re good to go! They provide a shuttle back to the airport from here, which departs about every 10-15 minutes depending on the crowd of people dropping off cars. The shuttle is free and only takes about 5 minutes to get to Keflavík International Airport.
