Attraction Tips

Offers a close view of the glacier

While Jökulsárlón is the more popular destination in the area and offers more in terms of experiences and views, Fjallsárlón allows an up close view of the glacier right along the shore. For any Game of Throne’s fans out there, this attraction is reminiscent of The Wall.

Facilities close at 7pm

There are facilities and bathrooms here, but they close at 7pm. If you visit here after Jökulsárlón later in the evening, you’ll still be able to see the attraction and walk up to the water, but the facilities will be closed.

How to Get There & Parking

Attraction Details

Before we dive into the details here, it’s worth mentioning that if you’re making a round trip visit back towards Vik or Reykjavík, you should go a bit further to visit Jökulsárlón first and then visit Fjallsárlón on the way back. By doing so, you get this attraction pretty much all to yourself if you visit at the end of the day.

When you arrive, there is a pretty spacious parking lot available right off Route 1 and facilities are available with places to eat and bathrooms – they are open from 9:30am-6pm. Up to the left of the building, there is a clear path to follow that will bring you to the Fjallsárlón ice lagoon area. The view in the images featured above isn’t visible from the parking lot, but it’s only about a 10 minute walk from the parking lot to get down to the water’s edge. Along the walk, the glacier starts to appear over a ridge and the further you walk, the more you’ll want to stop to take pictures – it’s truly an amazing sight.

We visited at the end of the day after our Ice Lagoon Zodiac Boat Tour at Jökulsárlón and, as we approached the glacier, we felt it was very Game of Thrones-esque to see this giant wall of ice disappear into the clouds. Fjallsárlón does offer boat tours and excursions, but the lagoon is significantly smaller than Jökulsárlón, so we would highly recommend going on a tour there instead. All things considered, we felt that Fjallsárlón should be treated as more of a serene visiting experience and we’d also recommend checking out KALEO ‘s music video for  “Save Yourself” before your visit. This Icelandic rock band performed on one of the floating icebergs – pretty iconic if you ask us!
