Attraction Tips

Visit the geysir in the middle of the park

There are many geysirs in the park, but the main attraction is one in the middle that goes off every 2-5 minutes. It goes off unpredictably, but is constantly going off, so have your video cameras ready!

Visit at off peak hours

Great Geysirs are a very popular attraction along the Golden Circle and there are many tour buses that stop here. We would recommend visiting this attraction either first thing in the morning or in the evening after the crowds have subsided.

How to Get There & Parking

Address:

Geysir, Iceland

Parking: Free

There are two parking lots – one as you drive up on the road to the right, or you can follow the fork in the road off to the left and offers a larger parking area with another entrance to the geysir park.

Attraction Details

When you arrive, there are two separate parking lots with plenty of room to park. We recommend the one up Haukadalsvegur road on the left, since it has more space and has a closer entrance for the full geysir field. There is a path right off of the parking lot where there is an information plaque to show the names of the geysirs and map of the setup.

While there are many different geysers in the park, the main one is called Strokkur and is right in the center – usually with a crowd surrounding it. This particular geyser goes off regularly every 4-8 minutes, but sometimes it’s pretty erratic and goes off more frequently. We only needed to stay for 15-20 min and watched the geyser go off a few times before heading out

A good tip if you’re visiting the Golden Circle later in the day – go to Gullfoss Falls first, then the Great Geysirs, because you could be waiting around for the perfect picture or video of the geysir going off and lose daylight to see the falls. Keep the geysirs as the last stop just in case!
