The Ultimate 6 Day Iceland Travel Guide and Itinerary – Day 6

Overview

Day 6 is the final day of this itinerary and it starts out by taking you around Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland to see the Londrangar View Point and Port Arnarstapi. After making a loop around the peninsula, the last major attraction for this itinerary lies in Kirkjufell & Kirkjufellsfoss – be sure to take plenty of pictures of the gorgeous mountain landscape. As you wrap up your day, soak in the last moments of your trip along the scenic drive back down to Reykjavik and enjoy some local Icelandic cuisine before heading back to the airport.

We hope you enjoyed this journey with us and want to hear what you think! If you used this itinerary to help plan your trip, reach out to us and tell us your favorite parts – we’d be more than happy to hear from you.

There are plenty of reasons why Kirkjufellsfoss is a photographers dream location to visit and capture moments from. Located near the town of Grundarfjörður on the Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland, this waterfall has an amazing backdrop whichever way you look at it and is very easy to get to. During the winter, this attraction draws many travelers chasing the northern lights to get a glowing shot of the legendary Kirkjufell.

Kirkjufell & Kirkjufellsfoss Tips

When putting in directions, set destination to Kirkjufellsfoss

Make sure to set your directions to take you to Kirkjufellsfoss. If you put in Kirkjufell, it will lead you down a road that dead ends at a private road, which doesn’t offer great views. When you arrive at Kirkjufellsfoss, we also recommend parking at the second parking lot across the bridge closer to the beach.

Walk down the path on the other side of the waterfall

To get the best pictures of both the Kirkjufell and Kirkjufellsfoss, walk down the path that looks back up to the waterfall and mountain.

Visit First Thing in the Morning or at Sunset

Since this is a very popular attraction, there are swarms of people that visit. In order to avoid people from getting in your pictures, you’ll want to arrive at a time with low visitor traffic. The best times for this are early in the morning or towards the end of the day at sunset. Separately, if you visit on a clear night during peak northern lights season, you’ll have an unforgettable experience.

This was our next to last time stopping to grab gas on the trip, filling up the tank enough to get us back to Reykjavik. It is very easy to pay with credit or debit card to pump gas before getting back on the road. Be sure to remember which side of the car the gas tank is on! If you need to use the restroom, it usually costs 100 ISK or you need to buy something in the store, but if you don’t have any cash, be polite and ask if you can use the restroom for free.

30 Minute Wait

Depending on when you visit, there will most likely be a line leading up to the stand. There was construction going on when we visited, so the line went along the building, as seen in the picture below. From this point, it was about a 25-30 minute wait from there to having hot dogs in our hands.

Skip if it's raining

While these hot dogs were awesome, we’re not sure if they’re worth waiting in a 30 minute line for if it’s raining.

Campervan Iceland (Drop-Off)

Stop 8 of 9

Type: Car Rental
Arrival Time:
 3:15pm
Departure Time: 3:45pm
Time Spent: 30 min
Bathroom Available? Yes

The drop-off procedure is very easy and only took us about 5-10 minutes. When you’re putting the address in, be sure to search Rent.is – not Campervan Iceland. Make sure to fill up the gas tank before you drop it off! There is a gas station only a few minutes before you get to the rental office, which is super convenient. When dropping the car off, all you need to do is pull up, unload the car and hand over the keys for them to do an inspection of the car to make sure there’s no damage.

Campervan Iceland Tips

Book in Advance

Be sure to make your reservation well in advance, especially during peak times of the year

Free Shuttle Service

Campervan Iceland provides free shuttle service from the airport to the agency office

Book the Right Car Type

If you need to drive an automatic car, make sure to select the correct vehicle type from the drop down at booking!

Double Check Pick-Up and Drop-Off Times

Make sure you’re aware that pick-up and drop-off times are in military time when making a reservation. Note that 5:00 is 5am and 17:00 is 5pm – we made the mistake of marking our drop-off time at 5:00 and it cost us an extra $151.50 / 18.400 ISK when we dropped our campervan off at 5pm because we had the car for an extra day then we paid for. Don’t be like us – get your times right!

Keflavík International Airport

Stop 9 of 9

Type: Airport
Arrival Time:
 3:55pm (1 hour 30 min before flight)
Departure Time: 5:25pm

As you wrap up your trip, check out our tips for getting through the airport without a hitch!

Keflavík International Airport Tips

Have your passport ready

Make life easier for everyone – have your passport easily accessible and on hand at all times when in the airport.

There isn't much of a boarding process

The boarding process for pretty much any flight at Keflavík International Airport is a bit convoluted, in that there is just one long line for all passengers. Airlines don’t call in groups here and it’s more of a first come first serve basis.

Make purchases at the airport, since everything is duty free

We would definitely recommend purchasing alcohol at the airport, as it is almost half the price there compared to when you buy it around the country.

Traveling with Liquids and Toiletries

Make sure all your liquids are in a quart sized plastic bag, or available to easily be put in a quart sized plastic bag, since they are available and given out for free at security. Anything that doesn’t fit will need to get thrown out! Individual containers of liquids and gels must be in 3.4 ounces.

Set aside 1 hour and 30 minutes for security and border control

When departing Iceland, it’s important to note that there are two separate lines you need to wait in. One is for initial security (which takes about 30-45 minutes) and after you get through, you need to walk through the airport a bit more before getting on line for border control. The separate border control line (which takes about 15-30 minutes) looks extremely long, but does move quicker and is much more efficient than the security line. They both still take quite a bit of time to get through, however, so make sure you leave plenty of buffer time getting to your flight.

When arriving, you can't buy anything until you pass through border control

There are sections of Keflavík International Airport where you need to show your boarding pass to purchase items. It’s important to note that if you’re arriving at the airport via a flight, you won’t be able to buy anything until you get past border control and exit the main airport area (not the building).
