Overview

Hagkaup is an Icelandic hypermarket chain and its concept is similar to that of Walmart in the United States. It is primarily a grocery store for food & drink shopping, but they also sell clothing, electronics and more. This is basically a one stop shop for everything you need before hitting the road for your adventure.

Recommended Shopping List for 5 days

For two people, this list lasted us the full five days for our trip outside of Reykjavík:
  • Snacks (Chips and Pretzels)
  • 1 Loaf of Bread
  • 1 lb of Cold Cuts
  • 0.5 lb of Cheese
  • 1 Tomato
  • Lettuce
  • 6 Packages of Ramen 
    • We also saw people on our trip at campsites cooking rice or risotto
  • 6 eggs
    • We hardboiled all of them the first night to eat anytime during the trip
  • Bananas
  • Chapstick
  • Consider Trash Bags or Plastic Bags to collect trash in your car
  • Paper Towels
    • We just got the cheap ones
    • These are useful to use as napkins and wiping down the condensation inside of the campervan after waking up in the morning 
  • Baby wipes
  • 2 Large Plastic Water Bottles 
    • We kept these for our entire trip and refilled them frequently
  • 6 Clif Bars

Additional Notes:

  • You could also buy raw meat to cook and “meal prep” the first night so that you can set yourself up for dinner every other night of the trip. This would be good for anyone who doesn’t want to cook for future nights and can have a meal prepared.
